Paddleroo is a small, independent guide to playing pickleball in Australia.
We started as a shop
That's the honest version. The plan was to sell complete pickleball kits for Australian driveways and backyards. We built the store, sourced a range, wrote the copy, priced everything up.
Then we did the homework properly, and the homework killed the plan.
Kmart, Big W and Target all sell a two-paddle pickleball set for about A$15. Our equivalent would have been A$69 with a two to three week wait. The Franklin X-40 — the official outdoor ball of the Pickleball Australia Association — costs around A$4. We were about to price a twelve-pack of unbranded balls at the same money. There are already more than twenty Australian pickleball retailers holding local stock, several with physical stores where you can hit with a paddle before you buy it, and at least five Australian paddle brands with the exact positioning we'd written for ourselves.
We could not honestly beat any of that on price, on speed, or on service. Listing the range anyway would have meant asking Australians to pay more, wait longer and take on more risk, in exchange for nothing.
So we do the part we can do well
Work the answers out properly. Check them against primary sources rather than repeating what other websites say. Publish them for free, with the prices and the failure modes left in.
That means we'll tell you the A$15 set is the right call for most beginners. That outdoor balls are consumables and last three to five sessions regardless of what you pay. That you don't need a net or a line marker kit to start, and that a box of footpath chalk does the job. That a wood paddle is heavier and harder on your elbow, but quieter — which matters more than you'd think if you have neighbours.
None of that is good salesmanship. It's just true.
How we check things
- Primary sources where they exist. The USA Pickleball equipment register and standards manual, Pickleball Australia Association figures, the ACCC and Australian Consumer Law itself — linked, so you can check us.
- Prices are dated. Every price on this site says when we checked it, because prices move and an undated price is a guess.
- We separate what we verified from what we're inferring, and we say which is which.
- We don't repeat claims we can't substantiate. If a product says "USA Pickleball approved" and we can't find the exact brand and model on the official register, we don't print it.
How we make money
Right now, we don't. There are no affiliate links on this site, no sponsored placements and no paid mentions. Nobody has paid us to name them, and the retailers we mention don't know we exist.
That will probably change — at some point there will likely be affiliate links, and if we ever find a product genuinely worth selling to Australian players we'll sell it. When either happens we'll say so plainly, on the page, not in a footer disclaimer.
Where we are
Paddleroo is run by one person, and not from Australia. We think that's worth saying up front rather than implying a Sydney warehouse we don't have. It's also part of why we're not selling you gear: we can't offer you a local warranty or a returns counter, and those things are worth real money.
